Hinduism
From Rig Veda:
Context: This text is part of a longer account wherein Indra is depicted slaying the dragon Vrtra, thus releasing the life-giving rain that Vrtra was keeping from humankind. The killing of Vrtra also is understood to be representative of Indra’s divine protection, as he assembles the world from the remains of the dragon. In a sense, this part of the Veda is defining the duties/dharma of Indra as a divine being.
“Over him as he lay there like a broken reed, the swelling waters flowed for mankind. Those waters that Vrtra had enclosed with his power, [through the intervention of Indra], the dragon now lay at their [humanity’s] feet.”
Buddhism
From Dhammapada IX:12
“Neither in the sky nor in the midst of the sea nor by entering into the clefts of mountains is there known a place on earth where stationing himself, a man can escape from (the consequences of) his evil deed.”
Zoroastrianism
From Gathas of Zarathustra, Yasna 46:11
Context: Karapans are “mumbler priests,” i.e. religious professionals who conduct the form of the ritual, but are not inspired. In fact, the larger text accuses them of taking money for ritual illicitly using the ecstatic drug Haoma for purposes other than the sacrament. Kavis (princelings), are politicians who assist and support Karapans in their corruption. Think: “corrupt religious leaders and shady politicians” and you have the sense of what Zarathustra is trying to say here.
“The Karapans and the Kavis through their domination and evil deeds have yoked
humanity to the destruction of life.
Their own souls and evil consciences will torment them when they reach
